For my incredibly little-spread software I use the scheme YY-DDD, so the 08-157 release refers to day 157 in the year 2008. It scales till the year 2099 (and further by then moving to YYY-DDD), and has the not to be underestimated advantage of providing a very easy way to calculate number of days between releases. The idea of 2008 in a version number does not appeal to me, those first two bytes are really wasted.
