The funny thing is the patch that breaks things looks to be an upstream patch to fix a real bug in 5.8.8. Nicholas Clark, the release manager for Perl 5.8.x commented on this bug. In particular, this problem was never present in any released version of Perl. Red Hat incorporated a pre-release patch into their version of Perl and maintained it across stable Perl releases, even though it was no longer appropriate, without contacting upstream. Backporting and maintaining cherry-picked patches from upstream without contacting upstream is generally a bad idea.
