If we are looking for core stuff to change, here is one. :)
Look at how many ways we show a program depending on it's state. Why?
For me rhythmbox shows up three places, if you subscribe to the idea of topbar as shortcut
bar.
"A program in memory is the same as program on storage". [1]
There is a technical difference, but who cares?

'Program in memory == program on storage' works only until you do a backup, and is really
annoying unless you have truly infinitely-long undo (or persistent time-expired undo at
least). Otherwise, you make a mistake and you can't tell if you can undo it or not...
