Just to clarify the sentence "SPI is a non-profit organization that acts as a kind of umbrella organization for Free Software projects like...." --
The Linux Standard Base project is under the umbrella of the Free Standards Group.

That's interesting -- it's also listed as a supported project of SPI:

LSB and GNOME both had a connection with SPI when they were new. That doesn't mean we keep baby from leaving home.
