as a user of the -stable kernels, my strategy is simple

if they update a driver that applies to hardware that I use I need to apply the update. I will
look at the description to see if there are further details that will indicate that it's less
critical, but usually I need to apply the fix no matter what bug it's fixing, simply becouse I
may run into the bug and crash the system.

I assume you also apply stable updates if something's changed in generic 
code that you're bound to run (say, mm).
