It appears that Linus Torvalds is considering changing the version numbering scheme to something more date-focused and easier to remember. So this may be the last Linux kernel using the "old" version numbering system. I've posted my proposal, offset 2000 versioning. As Linus says, "let the bike-shed-painting begin."
