In memoriam: Linux evangelist and Linux.com editor Joe Barr

Linux.com reports the death of longtime Linux author Joe Barr. "Many knew him as a Linux evangelist; others knew him from his ham radio activities. And those of us who worked with Joe knew him in all of his sometime irascible, often funny moods. Joe was always one of our favorite people, and we are devastated to report that he died at home, unexpectedly, last night."

Will om, I didn't get to work you on the bands. I will miss you and your stories--always of

He'll be missed. This has been a bad year. First Tim Russert (NBC Meet
the Press) whom I already miss, now Joe Barr, both sudden/unexpected. =8^(

I saw this on the linux.com feed and submitted it here, knowing many would
want to know and realizing it was getting close to the weekend so the LWN
folks might not see it, but LWN may have been already on it.

I remember Joe from his posts on varlinux.org. I read his last article, posted two weeks ago, on joebarr.org. It's a terrible tragedy that he died a bitter man. :-(

His web side does seem pretty full of bile, but that someone spews bile onto the internet is
not a particularly good indication that they are personally bitter. It might just have been a
release for him.

Speaking of which, far be it for Rob Malda to use an eulogy to a friend to break his ten
year-plus habit of never stringing a full sentence of words together correctly. Mr. E. E.
Cummings's name is neither spelled nor capitalized in the manner used by the Slashdot
"editor."

That eulogy was not written by Rob Malda.

Someone was too quick to flame ;) (Malda, Miller, what's the difference?
They both start with `M' and have the same number of syllables, thus
they're the same person, or something like that. ;} )

I guess you didn't read the poem. Otherwise you'd realize how foolish this post makes you
look in its context.

I'm sorry to hear that. I think I recall the name Joe Barr, but not so
sure. Anyway, I'm sure he will be missed. My condolences to his family.

What sad news. Joe Barr was a great journalist and always a friend to Open Source. Earlier this year he wrote a great feature article about the Nmap project's 10th anniversary 4.50 release. Of all the reviews and articles posted about the 4.50 release, his was the best because he took the time to contact me many times with questions and clarification requests to ensure an excellent article. That is why his is the only 4.50 review I posted to Insecure.Org, and it is still there near the top of the page.

Rest in peace.
