Some time ago, the Italian company, medialogic, worked on an X-compression proxy [...] but it seems the project has lapsed.

The NX technology still seem to be actively developed, check www.nomachine.com
Supposetly the core libaries will be Free Software. Unfortunately they also offer proprietory server and client versions.
