Virtual Bridges announces major update of Win4Lin [LWN.net]

Virtual Bridges has announced Win4Lin Desktop 5 with support for Ubuntu 8.04. "Version 5 of Win4Lin Desktop is very fast. Virtualized desktops are very convenient and do not require a user to either reboot or use a second personal computer to run their remaining PC applications (often Intuit Quicken or QuickBooks) but users often complain theyre just too slow. Users make this comment whether theyre running Windows virtualized on Linux, OS X or Solaris and regardless of which vendor has developed the virtualized desktop. Win4Lin Desktop 5 answers this concern with blazing speed. Based on a massively modernized code base, Win4Lin Desktop 5 makes it possible to eliminate the need for rebooting or for maintaining a second PC box."

Even their older versions were blazingly fast: on an
ancient 400 MHz system, MS project and visio loaded
and ran faster under linux, win4lin and win98 than
they did on the identical hardware under win98 alone.

A real MMU and a good elevator algorythm
does wonders, and there were lots of other
Windows misfeatures, some of which it looks
like they've recently adressed.
