I'm surprised that an encrypted disk wasn't an option for the OpenSuSE installer. I remember setting this up sometime ago when I installed SuSE 9.2 some time ago. At the time it was a very laptop friendly distribution as far as linux was concerned. (No suspend or hibernate as I recall - or at least I didn't try them)
