Clicking the 2008.0 handbook reveals a list of installer choices, one of which is the GTK+ installer. It still assumes you know what you're doing, but it's good at saving time.

I did, about 10 times before I realized (I'm a slow learner) that it wasn't me making the mistake, the installer just doesn't work. It's a known issue and one of the items that was brought up when the whole "gentoo foundation allowed to expire" event happened.
