Xandros Adopts Moblin for 25 Percent Battery Boost on Netbooks

Xandros Works with Intel and Moblin to Bring Energy-efficient Internet
Experience to Intel(r) Atom(tm) Processor-based Netbooks

Taipei, Taiwan (Computex) ? June 3, 2008 ? Xandros, Inc., the leading
provider of custom OEM Linux solutions and next-generation Linux desktop and
server products, and advanced cross-platform Windows-Linux management tools,
today announced that it will deliver Moblin-based products designed to
increase the battery life and energy efficiency of a new breed of simple,
affordable Internet devices called ?netbooks? using Intel(r) Atom(tm)
Processors. Xandros software will include technologies from Moblin.org, the
open source community for developing media and Internet solutions for
Internet-centric portable and embedded devices based on Intel Atom
processors. With the success of the ASUS Eee PC and demand for netbooks
burgeoning, Xandros decided to use Moblin.org technologies to take advantage
of increased power savings, fast boot performance, and expanded Internet and
media capabilities. Custom OEM netbooks using Moblin-based Xandros
technology will go to market in the second half of 2008, delivering the rich
user experience that customers are expecting on these platforms, plus a 25
percent boost in battery life.

?Bringing the Internet usage to simple, affordable mobile devices is an
exciting and fast growing market? said Doug Fisher, Intel Vice President
and General Manager, System Software Division. ?Our work with the open
source community via Moblin.org in optimizing the Linux stack for low power
technologies of Intel(r) Atom(tm) Processor is extended to Xandros. We look
forward to Moblin-based Xandros solutions delivering good Internet
experiences on Intel(r) Atom(tm) Processor-based netbooks, while enjoying
longer battery life.?

?Linux has proven to be a solid and efficient platform for the Eee PC(tm),
and with the introduction of Moblin technologies optimized for
energy-efficient Intel(r) Atom(tm) processors, the experience only gets
better,? said Jerry Shen, CEO of ASUS. ?We are delighted that Intel and
Xandros are working together to optimize efficiencies, and look forward to
passing them on to Eee PC(tm) users in the very near future.?

?The Moblin software stack optimizations for Intel Atom processors,
extending battery life and enhancing support for multimedia files, greatly
increase our ability to satisfy the media-rich lifestyle of today?s mobile
users in a timely manner,? said Andreas Typaldos, CEO of Xandros. ?Working
with ASUS on products like the ASUS Eee PC has demonstrated the huge
potential market for Linux-based netbooks, and we are excited to present
customized Moblin-based solutions for Intel Atom processors to this
ultra-portable platform.?

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.moblin.org/ The following error was encountered: Unable to determine IP address from host name for www.moblin.org The dnsserver returned: Server Failure: The name server was unable to process this query. This means that: The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL. Check if the address is correct.
Not very confidence inspiring.

With Asus EEE being a reality, these Atom Netbooks sound like a premature hype. Wait and see,
I would say.

Given that the new EEE is using an atom chip and a Xandros OS I think you could retitle this
story "New EEE's battery will last 25% longer"
