Linux-Watch reports that
videos from the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit are now available
online. The article points to several videos from keynotes and roundtable
panels. It looks like all the videos are available here.

Anybody else having trouble watching these?

Playback pauses very frequently for several seconds, as if the video is rebuffered every 10-30
seconds. Same on a mac and at very different times (European night and morning), so I guess
it's a server-side problem?

The server hosting the videos appears to be either quite slow, or overloaded. The video of the
panel of kernel hackers is 463MB and it downloads at 50kB/s, so if you were to actually watch
it in the browser you'd probably have to sit there for 3-4 hours.

It mostly works. Let it buffer a bit (say, 5-10 minutes) then it should be ok. What sucks much
more, and this has also been the case with past LF videos, is that the sound level is extremly
low.

If you open the page source and look for ".flv" you should find the url pretty easily, they
aren't obfuscated like on youtube... Still, you'd expect open formats and download links on
something called the "linux foundation".

If I remember correctly, the FLV format was opened by Macromedia a few weeks ago. Of course, it will take time until it ends up in the free part of the distro of your choice.

The videos should be playable by anything that can use ffmpeg... so media players based on
mplayer, gstreamer and xine will work.
me too

Yup, lack of a direct link annoys me too.
(and when I do play the .flv with mplayer, the video is way faster than the sound.)

I tried to watch Corbet in the browser with gnash and failed. Then I poked at it a second to
find the url to the .flv which I wget'd. Then I started to play that file with mplayer only
to find the audio/video terribly out-of-sync (and with super low levels).
Now I understand youtube (but dislike) using .flv but why should I have to go thru this to
watch something from *Linux Foundation*. Totally lame.

I like this sort of thing because it makes it easier to tell were they are coming from.
To them:
Linux != Open Source,
Linux != Freedom.
For them Linux is a platform to launch competitive products. Some may be closed source, some
may not. They are more interested in doing what seems easier, more profitable, and more inline
with the larger computer world.
This is fine. It's useful information since it gives you a good idea of their goals and on
what sort of things they are useful for and you can trust them with.

If you access the page with javascript disabled it offers a nice link to the raw FLV video. My thanks go to the wonderful NoScript.
Also, xine shows the video perfectly. (VLC displays it well, but seek doesn't seem to work.) I always keep them around, and lately mplayer is showing a certain state of decay.

Howdy from the Linux Foundation. We always intended to supply a truly open format of these
videos. Our video provider *thought* they could, but it turned out they couldn't and we felt
we should get them up as soon as we could before the information became totally stale and
out-of-date. Unfortunately, we do have limited resources so it takes some time.
We have however read your comments with much interest and posted direct links to the .flv
files on the pages of our site. I hope this makes it slightly easier for people to download
and view.
Our servers were stressed at first and I realize we had some viewing difficulties. I do hope
that some of you, at least, got to view the videos (especially of your grumpy editor.) We'll
evolve this over time, but I do hope that some of you found it useful to view this content. If
you have feedback, for us, please feel free to email me (amanda at linuxfoundation . . .)
