If something is not used by user at all and it starts to be used - expect the breakage. The only way to "solve" this problem is to change nothing - and this leads to "XP forever" campaigns...

It's Ok for BETA version of software to depend on new but RELEASED version of library. Most distributions include GTK 2.12 nowadays and if someone wants to use something ancient - that's their problem. Sid includes GTK+ 2.12 too so once Debian will manage to issue new release - problem will be in the past.
