Technically there are not patches. As you mention in the article, such changes are done in the pristine-tarball: it would have no sense to include a non-free code twice: on original source and as removing patch.

IIRC there is also a proposal for an better documentation (and automatically usable) of how to generate pristine tarballs (original source, removing non-free files, change of format, ...)
