Bringing Microsoft to the table: Can MS become an open source contributor? (Zonker's openSUSE spotlight)

Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier looks at the collaboration between Novell and Microsoft, on his openSUSE blog. "The announcement went out today that Novell and Microsoft are collaborating around the OpenPegasus project and other system management tools. Thanks to Novell, Microsoft is going to be contributing to several open source projects -- and making Linux easier to manage. Yes, you read that right. It will also make Windows easier to manage using Linux tools -- which is going to be a breath of fresh air for Linux admins tasked with managing Windows boxen as well."

I presume that linux boxes will have a ~$200 per seat client license fee, while the Windows
boxes will be free. In effect, MS gets their OS system profit back.

Pardon the cynicism, but it sounds like microsoft wants to create a world where ms windoze is
required in order to manage unix/linux.

I don't want to seem too cynical but untill I see that this isn't another grab at embrace and
extend, another way of integration to make you dependent on MS products and see actual value
here, I'll say this is just another case of embrace and extend and another way of making you
locked into their platform.

I agree with others here. If the ISO/OOXML fiasco has taught us anything it is that M$ is
incapable of competing on a level playing field.

I already use Windows to manage Linux (Zonker's openSUSE spotlight)

Since the fancy VPN client with the extra certification gizmos only runs on Windows, on my
employer-supplied laptop, I have to use Windows.

But Putty and SSH to a Linux command line takes care of the rest...
