Jury trials in the US are inherited from English common law, and ultimately from the Magna Carta. So blame a bunch of barons holding King John over a barrel eight hundred years ago. (A bunch of barons who could not by any stretch of the imagination be described as 'geeks' but who were correcting some definite injustices, from their POV...)
