Benchmarking Linux With the Phoronix Test Suite (LinuxPlanet)

LinuxPlanet takes a look at the Phoronix Test Suite. "Knowing how to measure your own computer performance gives you mighty system and network tuning powers. It's also fun to run various benchmarks on commercial products because most of them forbid publishing any kind of benchmark results--but they can't stop you from talking to friends. We're going to take a look at the brand-new Phoronix Test Suite, which is so new the black tape and alligator clips are still visible. The Phoronix Test Suite is for testing hardware performance under Linux. It's still very young and incomplete, but it's worth getting acquainted with--it is based on the the scripts developed by the fine folks (mainly Michael Larabel, it seems) at Phoronix for hardware testing. Phoronix Test Suite is intended to be more than another benchmarking utility; it is an open, extensible platform for creating and customizing all kinds of Linux benchmarking."

Careful... phoronix is pro opensolaris... then their benchmarks...
Do not forget that the GPLv3 for openoffice is cancelled by the agreement you have to sign in
order to contribute to openoffice (basically you let Sun be able to go proprietary without
your consent). If one day, opensolaris goes GPLv3... and if there is the same agreement, it
even worse than a BSD license.
Nethertheless, Phoronix is a centralized place for a majority of nice pieces of news.

I'm surprised that this isn't distributed as a live cd. If the focus is on benchmarking the
hardware, a stable and standardized kernel and OS configuration is rather desirable. As this
is distributed, what ends up being benchmarked is the OS(kernel, configuration, etc) plus the
hardware, which can make for odd comparisons.

Dunno; I think that including the kernel and OS configuration is half the point, since Linux
is so extremely customizable--seeing the result of the tweaking is a good thing!

It's not against your consent if you know in advance the option is there when you contribute.
If you don't want them to have the option then don't contribute. This isn't much different
than any project which requires copyright assignment as that's essentially what you are doing.
It's not as if the GPL code can be "taken back" as once the license is granted the code is out
there to be relicensed.

The vast majority of reporting and reviews on Phoronix seems to be Linux related, so I can't
see much justification for the claim they are pro-OpenSolaris. I'm fine with them reviewing
and benchmarking OpenSolaris though: it's a valid open source alternative to Linux and BSD,
and has the advantage of in-kernel ZFS that is relatively mature compared to the Linux/FUSE
and BSD ZFS options.
