Google talks up Android: open ecosystems lead to innovation (ars technica)

ars technica reports from Robert Love's Android talk at LugRadio Live. "Google has done a lot to demonstrate its commitment to making Android an open and inclusive platform, but there are still some issues that concern developers. Although the kernel and much of the platform source code are available from a public git repository, there are still some parts of the stack that haven't been fully opened yet. Love cited the high rate of code churn as one reason why some code isn't public at this stage and said that all of the source code will be fully available under open licenses after phones start to ship during the second half of this year. 'To do this right—to open source this in a way that is beneficial to the community—we want to wait until the code isn't a big mess.''

My understanding is that they also want to wait to make sure the first phones are properly
QA'ed. It would hurt the brand and image if some cheap knockoff manufacturer shipped a phone
with the current system, which as he says still has lots of bugs to be worked out.

Speaking of which, I just noticed that openmoko has published all their CAD files in
CreativeCommons Sharealike!

Very cool!

I think openmoko is planning to be compatible with android, although I don't fully understand
what that means.

Also, they've announced they are just about ready to start selling the new phone for $399.

I don't buy the high rate of code churn. The git public repo shows probably less than 200
patches since the middle of February. that's 3 patches per day.

For the patches to be merged later on, they should make sure the code is properly written as
they go. Before they fully stabilize the platform.

I see Android's licensing has not been clarified still.

"Although the kernel and much of the platform source code are available from a public git

Unless "much of the platform source code" means "NO platform source code at all", that's
wrong. git.android.com hosts just the kernel trees so far.
