People contribute and improve Linux and other software in a community, not because of some vague 'community' hand-waving.. but because it's in their self interest to do so. It furthers their own personal goals, whether it's money, self satisfaction, or any other hosts of reasons.Sounds like a definition of community to me. A group of people that co-operate together to some extent in order to individually achieve personal goals. As far as Free Software being a pain in the ass that's true but it's also true that proprietary software is a PITA and there's less you can do about fixing it.
