Supercharge Your Camera with Open-Source CHDK Firmware (Wired)

Wired provides an overview of CHDK, a free firmware enhancement for Canon cameras. "CHDK, the Canon Hacker's Development Kit, is an open-source software project that can be loaded on cameras using Canon's DIGIC II or DIGIC III firmware platforms. It unleashes new features including RAW file format, live histogram display, a battery readout, and the ability to run scripted actions on a camera."

Wow. I wish I'd know about this before I bought my Sony DSC-w55.
I really like a lot of things about the Sony camera, but there
are some missing features (RAW format, for example) that seem like
they'd be easy to implement, and were just left out to differentiate
this model from higher-priced ones. Are there similar projects for
other cameras?

i first found out about this 6 months ago from an o'reilly blog post which references this equally old linux.com article, so the info has been out there for a little while, you just have to "cast a wide enough net" with your rss reader to catch it.

The RAW format on these cameras can be useful, but not to the extent that it is on an SLR. The
sensor is pretty small and the 10-bit raw files are quite noisy. Using your own software to
convert the RAW means you lose the noise reduction the camera performs.

I used this on my Powershot A620. My workflow was
1) The Windows version of dng4ps (linux version wouldn't recognize original JPGs)
2) ufraw 0.13

So for every shot I save I have four files, the CHDK RAW, a DNG RAW, the original JPG, and my
final JPG.

For underwater photos in which the white balance is really messed up, this combination is
useful, but I'd never use it for a regular picture.
