Objectionable? Nothing. But the whole "success is sales" metric is clearly not understanding a (at least to me) huge part of OSS.

I thought it was clear in the first paragraph that Brett meant to discuss "success" in terms of business success. In that context, "sales" or "conversions" or "support contracts" seems a much better metric than "downloads". That doesn't apply in the case of community-driven projects, but then again neither does "downloads".
