Novell starts talking SLES 11 (eWeek)
eWeek reports
on Novell's plans for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, as discussed at the
company's BrainShare 2008 conference. "The technical areas of
primary focus will be the mission-critical data center, the tools to allow
Unix-to-Linux migration, green IT, and continued work on the Linux desktop,
[CTO Jeff] Jaffe said. On the mission-critical data center front, SLES 11
will include automated and assisted self-healing capabilities, including
single-node clusters and automated hardware failure detection, he
said."

I manage a fair share of SLES boxes and constantly hit my head when it comes to collisions, updates and upgrades. SLES would really rock if it could handle dependancies correctly like debian or redhat.

The Novell open workgroup server includes Netware on Linux, Groupwise and Zenworks software deployment software, SUSE desktop and Open Office all with support and comes in at $80 a seat. That's 10% of the cost of deploying the Microsoft equivalent cost savings. It's actually surprising that I haven't seen more Novell deployments just on the cost factor. I know groupwise isn't Exchange+outlook but it's almost as good. I'm actually considering deploying it at home Just for some of the managed benefits that netware provides. Are any of you seeing new Novell deployments as a result of their product offerings and price?

Actually no but i suspect it has more to do with third party applications in sweden only having AD support. If/when novell ships their samba with full AD support i think many people will think about it again.

They have pretty much shaken out all the bugs we still had in this area and have Linux Laptops in their Windows environment... (If this is what you mean ;) Ciao, Marcus
