Apparently, the NVIDIA adapter code sets its license to "NVIDIA", so it doesn't get access to
GPLONLY symbols.  I haven't checked this myself, but I've seen others mention it.

You are completely right:

$ modinfo nvidia
...
license:        NVIDIA
...
