What's coming in Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring [LWN.net]

The Mandriva developers are putting together a "what's coming" document describing the 2008 Spring release, which has just gone into release-candidate status. "The graphical software manager now defaults to searching only among applications with a graphical user interface, rather than among all available packages (of course, it is still easy to switch to searching through all available packages), reducing the confusion new and inexperienced users find on being presented with lots of packages they likely are not interested in installing."

What would be really useful is if Mandriva could package a few more applications. Many of the
more esoteric ones are not built by default. 

Couldn't this be automated? Write a script to download src.rpms (or src.debs) from all the
other main distros; then build for Mandriva; use "alien" if necessary.

Did you check main/ and contrib/ and non-free/ too?  There's ~19GB in there...

Yes - I know. Running 2008.0 at the moment on my desktop. But nevertheless, Ubuntu/Debian have
about 50% more programs, and there are quite a few that Mdv do not have. After all, the point
of the repository should be universality - searching rpmdrake is only really useful if you
know that, if  rpmdrake doesn't contain what you want, you can stop looking.

Hmm, also easyurpmi.zarb.org Make sure you add plf plf-nonfree repos. 

For my need, packages for Mandriva from other repos are excellent. It's rare that I could not
find something that's already in the repos (including plf).

Anyone knows why the screen shot for Eee PC only 3/4 of the actual screen size. You can't use
full screen with Mandriva?

That's the size of the LCD on the Eee PC.  The rest is the speaker and other black plastic.
