My anecdotal evidence is that CFS gave my Gentoo-compiling laptop much, much better interactive feel. The thing that hurts interactivity for me is disk writes, the IO queue fills and then its goodbye disk scheduling, hello, pause, page-in, pause, screen update, pause, lag, lag, lag.
