The article states that X has no competitors. I do not think that statement does justice to the situation. X11 is basically a communications protocol. You could make analogies to TCP/IP or HTTP. X11 may be the protocol that all Unix workstations use, but that does not mean they are all running the same software. There are different X Servers for Linux, and in that sense you do have a choice.
