Alksnis and Ponosov in the front of fighting for Linux (CNews)

"Deputy" here means member of parliament (State Duma). Alksnis used to be one of the most controversial figures in Russian politics. To see it on "our side" is amusing, to put it mildly.

Well, let's judge particular people on particular deeds. E.g. thank you for maintaining controversial `mc' package, for which I've once been a controversial contributor. :) PS: what's way more interesting is that (+other) folks are really working, not only verbally. The school project is so far quite interesting; I took part in internal Armada testing of "finalist" distributions after a tender was won and these were prepared -- our firm supplies modified (and published) ALTSP5 technology along with ALT Linux to form school-oriented terminal server solution.

What Alksnis wanted to demonstrate is just another anti-US gesture (MS Windows == US dependence). He has no sympathy to the software freedom - nor to any other freedom. It's kind of "let's be friends against somebody". We don't need such "friends".

He wrote several parliament member requests to different government structures including federal antimonopoly service about microsoft and linux. He tried to bring attention of parliament and president to the problem of MS domination. Of course you know what kind of people go up high ehough into our post-Soviet politicum. I think politicians could impact I.T. only in negative ways. Who do you think created circumstances that have made "Ponosov affair" possible at all ? Microsoft ? Not. It was caused only by overly-zealous Russian "law" "enforcers". Without support from the underneath, no initiative from the top would work. Alksnis, Ponosov and Medvedev all give me only a bitter laugh, each for his own reason. To fix the formed situation, a single End of World would not be enough.

I can say that I'm clearly anti-American because that country is clearly hostile to my mother country, Russia, for no real reason (but envy and fear), and has caused *lots* of damage in Ukraine where I live; and I have no overly warm feelings over "software freedom" (hey these are bytes, what are you speaking of?). This has nothing to do with my friends from (or in) America, and with my involvement with free software -- merely because people matter, not labels. And yes, I do have many friends against common "somebody"; it helps.

For Alksnis, it's merely a PR move. In usual search for publicity and noticeability, as is necessary for politicians. For Ponosov, this move is again a reaction, not pro-action. And of course their familiarity with the technology is rather limited and vague (Ponosov's is slightly better that Alksnis, but not enough to lead the movement anyway). And do you realy think they'll find any followers who'd "do the actual deeds" ? I don't deem this believable.
