X Windows alternatives on Unix

I like X. Wrote 1000's lines of Xlib code a decade ago. As user,
I am using it for 13 years. There are other possibilities
on Unix however - Mac OS X does not use X Windows.
I have no experience with it but read that it uses
some sort of "Display PDF" instead. I don't know if it
supports network transparency like X Windows.

There are some things that are hard or cumbersome with X.
Font configuration is one.

Windows does not have application level network transparency
like X. But Windows's remote desktop connection does work
nicely.
