I, too, was a bit surprised to see SGI making an acquisition. But while they've lost prestige in the business community (going from a market cap of $5 billion in 1995... to $190 million today) they certainly haven't lost it in the tech community: http://lwn.net/Articles/229873/

It's amazing how a company like SGI can survive making Linux supercomputers for the government..
