Interview with Michael Shiloh of OpenMoko (SCALE)
The Southern California Linux Expo has posted an
interview with OpenMoko's Michael Shiloh, who will be at the event. "The
Neo FreeRunner looks a lot like the earlier model, the Neo 1973, with some
additions: we've added WiFi, a faster processor, more memory, a 2D/3D
graphics accelerator, and a pair of accelerometers. The goal of our
extensive testing, before we go into mass production, is to verify the
hardware so that no changes will be necessary."

Whilst I love OpenMoko and will purchase one in the near future.. that purchase or recommendation to others is on hold until they get 3G support into the phone. I'm in Australia, and everything is going 3G here... 2G is pretty legacy now.

This thing that is loosely called 3G consists of six different and incompatible RF transports and at least two data layers. Which of those are in use where you are?

UMTS 3G is what people commonly expect and has by far the biggest market share outside North America - if it supports HSDPA that's nice, but not essential.

I have to agree. After using UMTS for connecting my phone and laptop, I can't see myself going back (especially since we don't have edge around here, and plain GPRS connections leave a lot to be desired). The question is, would a good coverage for 3rd generation technologies require that OpenMoko release one model/continent (or something like that)? It seems to me that others (eg Motorola) have succeeded in bringing it together in one phone, but maybe I've misunderstood? Anyway, apart from that quibble - the new (and the old) Neo phone has me salivating. I would really love to lay my hands on one. (Well, I have - and my friend had to wrestle me to the ground to get it back. :)
