Announcing the first stable release of the LV2 specification.

LV2 is a simple but extensible successor of LADSPA, intended to address
the limitations of LADSPA which many applications have outgrown. By
creating LV2 "extensions" (which can be done independently), virtually
any feature is possible for LV2 plugins and hosts.

This release (revision 1) has been in active use by many projects for
several months, including several extensions for advanced features
beyond the capabilities of LADSPA or DSSI.

Strong long-term compatibility is a primary goal of LV2: all future
revisions of LV2 will remain backwards compatible with previous
revisions.

All the components of the "core" LV2 specification are packaged here:

http://lv2plug.in/spec/lv2core-1.tar.gz

Distributions are encouraged to include this package.

More information, downloads, and links to LV2-using projects can be
found at:

http://lv2plug.in/

Happy hacking,

~ The LV2 team

Mentioning what LV2 and/or LADSPA and/or DSSI are in the front page article summary might be
useful.

Announcing the first stable release of the VL4 specification.

VL4 is a simple but extensible successor of GALTUB, intended to address
the limitations of GALTUB which many applications have outgrown. By
creating VL4 "extensions" (which can be done independently), virtually
any feature is possible for VL4 plugins and hosts.

This release (revision 1) has been in active use by many projects for
several months, including several extensions for advanced features
beyond the capabilities of GALTUB or OMMG.

Strong long-term compatibility is a primary goal of VL4: all future
revisions of VL4 will remain backwards compatible with previous
revisions.

....or in the "full story" for that matter.

Clicing through to lv2plug.in, I read that

"LV2 is a standard for plugins and matching host applications, mainly targeted at audio
processing and generation."

It's all just audio plugins used in audio editing applications. Nothing very mysterious about
it or anything. Unless your a complete newbie when it comes to audio editing in Linux (which
in itself is not a bad thing) you'll know already what LADSPA is and what LV2 is for if your
at all interested in anything it would do for you.

It would of been nice, of course, if somebody simply asked:

"What is LASPDA or VL2 and why should I care?" and have gotten a simple repsonse rather then
all the slashdot-isque silliness.

The point is valid - simply mentioning that short summary about LV2 would have been enough to
help readers decide if the story was interesting without having to click through.

We think so, but either there is no editor reading these comments, or the editor doesn't
agree.

The editor does eventually read the comments. The article could have been a bit more explicit about what LV2 and LADSPA are, links to both sites were included for those who did not know. LADSPA is something that shows up frequently on the devlopment page, similar to Samba, Apache, GNOME and KDE. Perhaps it was wrong to assume that the acronym was widely understood by front page readers.

It's not clear to me what the expected behavior is from developers.

Should I update my LADSPA plugins to use LV2? Am I expected to develop and maintain LV2
plugins in parallel with the LASPA plugins? Or are application developers expected to retain
back compatibility with LADSPA so that plugins like mine still work ?

Presumably LV2 plugins can't be used by old software which only knows about LADSPA, is there
an adaptor of some sort that fixes this? Or are we hoping that all such software will be
updated to LV2 over the next few months ?

As they're reinventing something, I wonder why they didn't use Gstreamer instead. NIH syndrome
?
