This is a hard one for me. I suffer from RSI, and use various adaptive technologies to deal with it. As a result, I "type" at around 30 words per minute typically, take frequent breaks, and I don't use the computer for more than a couple hours a day, if that.

Obviously, I prefer email communications over IRC, though I do occasionally use IRC for short periods of time. The latency of email is a clear advantage, as nobody really needs to know that I take breaks in the middle of writing something. On IRC, it's strange and frustrating to someone else when I drop out of the middle of a conversation for ten minutes.

Incidentally, emacs played a large role in the onset of my RSI. Stallman has also suffered from RSI; I don't know his computing habits, but I don't think it's coincidental.

You could blame Emacs, or the awfulness which is flattish QWERTY
keyboards. I know my RSI vanished as soon as I moved from QWERTY to a
decent contoured keyboard, without needing to torment myself and ruin my
productivity by abandoning XEmacs :)
