CES 2008: GP2X Linux-Based Handheld Game Console (Wired)

The folks at Wired found a fun Linux-based gadget at the Consumer Electronics Show which starts today in Las Vegas. It is a games console in a Playstation Portable form factor that looks rather interesting. "Unfortunately, no actual games were installed on it to see how it performed, but just getting to fondle it fills me with determination: I shall acquire one and exhaustively test it. Wikipedia says it runs other emulators up the Wazoo: everything from the Amstrad to original arcade games."

I've got one of those gp2x's.

It doesn't do X or anything like that. It's a very bare bones Linux system with SDL support.
It's pretty cool with the emulators and all that.. nintendo, sega genesis, mame, and the like.
It's got enough 'umph' to play Quake1 and simple games, but Quake2 is a bit to much for the
system. Haven't realy played around with it much lately, though.

Er... well, it doesn't do it WELL, but...

...and with the dock and a keyboard you can certainly get a shell, mouse support, plug in your
mp3 player as an external hard drive, etc.

I love my GP2X; great toy for long airplane flights (using the hub and my mp3 player I had all
the video I could want, and the AA batteries mean you can carry plenty of replacements).
