Linux lines up its best shot (vnunet)

Vnunet thinks the Linux revolution is still a long ways off. "There is no shortage of pundits who believe that Linux is taking off. IDC, Gartner, Aberdeen and the Robert Francis Group all predict a massive upsurge in the employment of Linux, at some stage soon. That said, whenever analysts agree on something, they are usually wrong."

Well, they are usually wrong when they disagree as well.

Let me summarize this argument
over the past few years.

1999: Linux is irrelevant.
Analysts do not even know about it.

2001: Prominent analysts say Linux stand no chance.

2003: Analysts say Linux is the future.
But everyone knows they are always wrong.

2005: ?

Analysts always proceed ass-backwards ...

So they think the Linux revolution is a long way off? Surely this just means that the revolution has passed them by and they haven't spotted it yet. When they do, they'll wonder how on earth they missed it.

Cheers,
Wol

This article was definately written by someone who is still trying to get his mind
around the whole OSS idea. He/She is trying desperately to use the
convensions of commercial software. There is no-one that is going to make the
marketing push for OSS and linux over microsoft. Its just better at the job and
cheaper, and IT mangers are pretty much figuring that out on thier own.

I'm getting really tired of having to turn off TCP ECN support just to check out a web page. This is the modern equivalent to "best viewed at 800x600 on Netscape 2.0 <insert download link here>". Folks, it's been like 3 years now, upgrade your freakin' firewall already.

Linux lines up its best shot ... and shoots holes through this article. There are too many misconceptions, lies, half-truths, barely concealed FUD, unresearched opinions, to summarise quickly. This quote tells you all you need to know:

The main Linux distributors are minnows in comparison to the denizens of the software industry. And while each distributor has geographical strengths, no single Linux distributor has the global reach or the resources to provide the back-up required by large corporations and independent software vendors.

Ermmm ... Red Hat and IBM anyone?

Rich.
