Samba team gets Microsoft protocol documents

The Samba team has announced the signing of an agreement with Microsoft which will result in the delivery of Microsoft's protocol documentation. "We will be able to use the information obtained to continue to develop Samba and create more Free Software. We are hoping to get back to the productive relationship we had with Microsoft during the early 1990's when we shared information about these protocols. The agreement also clarifies the exact patent numbers concerned so there is no possibility of misunderstandings around this issue."

Of course, it is always good to be cautious with Microsoft. But at the very least the
decisions of the European Institutions of forcing interoperability have lead to a situation
that looks more promising than ever before. It would seem that politicians and so-called
technocrats in Brussels have more backbone than they are usually credited for.

If things work out the way they seem, the entire IT industry should profit from it. Already
today Samba powers most (if not all) of the consumer NAS-devices, a market that would not even
exist, if we were dependend on Microsoft alone...

Suing somebody for making use of documents that you provided to them is pretty much the definition of "bad faith" and "frivolous" litigation. Judges do not look kindly on such things.
