Linux gives the NYSE lower costs and independence (CNET)

Over at CNET, Matt Asay discusses the recent news about the New York Stock Exchange rolling out more Linux and less proprietary UNIX. "For those who believe they need to earn their living and make the difficult decisions that turn IT into a functional part of one's business, however, there are better options. Open source is one of them, of course, but it need not be the exclusive option. Sometimes a proprietary system will better fit a CIO's requirements. That's fine. But the point is that it should be the CIO who makes that decision, not the vendor."

Switching from solarix

I remember when NYSE switched from mainframes to Sun's Solaris. Believe it or don't, that
changed many peoples' minds on whether UNIX would be viable in the long run. (MS wasn't in
the running.) At the time, solarix was less reliable and scalable than Linux is today, but
Sun was very responsive.

I love that we've gotten to the point where computer pundits are counseling people that proprietary software is sometimes an okay option.

Matt Asay is an open-source pundit so his stance isn't that surprising. When you get Gartner
saying the same thing I'll be more interested...

You may have to wait a while

Hell might freeze over before that happens. ;-)
