A first look at KDE 4.0 release candidate 2 (ars technica)

ars technica reviews the second KDE 4.0 release candidate. "The second KDE 4 release candidate illuminates the extent to which KDE 4 has matured since the earlier betas, but a massive infusion of debugging and polish is needed before the release next month. Heavy development on KDE 4 will obviously continue after the KDE 4.0 release, so whatever pieces are still missing are sure to be filled in eventually. Some critics point to the deficiencies of KDE 4 and argue that drastic reinvention of basic desktop components might not have been a good idea. After experiencing KDE 4 myself, I have to disagree."

From the article screenshots I see that the upper right corner of the desktop has a menu
button.

I haven't tested this feature yet, but if KDE4 has customizable corner or edge menus out of
the box, this will finally be a step in the right direction.

I am definitely looking forward to try out the finished version.

it isn't user configurable (yet =), but it is managed by the desktop
containment so can be easily customized according to context.

So... if this "release candidate" requires "a massive infusion of debugging and polish"...
then it isn't really a release candidate, is it? More like an early beta, I'd think...

It doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence in the organization's release process (and
therefore, level of quality) if they call things that are fairly obviously not done yet,
"release candidates."

KDE is not alone in this, so don't take it as an indictment solely of them. But it is rather
annoying.

Linus seems to do the same thing with the kernel names these days.

rc is the new beta! *shrug*

I recall Linus saying that "RC" should really stand for "Ridiculous Count" anyway.

The problem is one of attracting testers. How do you get a wide base of testers to try
something out and see how it works for them if it is labeled as "Alpha" or "Early Beta" when
such words often convey thoughts that the software is dangerous, might eat your puppy, say
rude things about your mother, etc. The answer: lie, call it an RC, and get interested users
and new developers who can hammer on it and get the software into shape far quicker than the
few folks who first put the "RC" together in the first place. Now the flip side of this is
that impatient people who want their great new software NOW and have it with minimal pain,
inconvenience, and mother disrespecting bugs get burned. My opinion: Get over the semantic lie
and accept it as part and parcel of getting a massive release together.

there's also the issue of getting a herd of self-directed volunteers who
have been allowed to range unfettered through the code base for 18 months
or so after 7 years of principled release cycles back into a release
mindset. =)

Oops, looks like KDE is suffering from CADT.

Oh boy, that is surprising. I am KDE fan since I discovered Linux, more than 2 years ago.
But if they make an abrupt move like closing my bugs and not giving me an easy way to keep
them alive I would have to quit using the thing.
If people write software only for their fun, I will go use other software, that is written to
help me, even if that means closed sorce.

the plan IS to give a way to keep the bugs alive. We want to ping the ppl
who submitted the bugreport to ask them to check if they are still useful
with KDE 4. Yes, you will have several months to check for that - at the
least, if we do it at all.
