The Ubuntu team is happy to announce the first release of Ubuntu JeOS,
Ubuntu JeOS 7.10. Pronounced "juice", Ubuntu JeOS (Just Enough Operating
System) is an efficient variant of Ubuntu configured specifically for
virtual appliances.

ISVs looking to develop virtual appliances will have a compelling platform
in Ubuntu JeOS, an OS optimised for virtualisation that greatly reduces the
complexity and maintenance overhead normally associated with general purpose
operating systems. Ubuntu JeOS Edition has been tuned to take advantage of
key performance technologies of the latest virtualisation products from
VMware. This combination of reduced size and optimized performance ensures
that Ubuntu JeOS Edition delivers a highly efficient use of server resources
in large virtual deployments.

You can read more about Ubuntu JeOS in the following press release:

Ubuntu JeOS 7.10 released

Is there a forum or mailing list for JeOS? I couldn't find one.

A question... Our company might want to distribute a virtual machine, and JeOS is a good
candidate. Because we'd be distributing GPL'd software, we need to distribute the source. Is
there an easy way to extract the source packages for JeOS or another Debian/Ubuntu-based
virtual machine?

I realize that the GPL is widely ignored in this role (as it also is with Knoppix-like
distributions), but we'd need to follow the letter of the law for this usage.

See also the discussion at ubuntuforums:

for tips about something much more useful IMHO than the JeOS iso image:
ubuntu-jeos-builder - a straightforward shell script using qemu-img and debootstrap to build VMs for
vmware, qemu, and kvm (so far). It is not officially released so far, but it is pretty easy
to grab and run right out of the source tree. Much faster and less complicated than going
thru the install process with an iso image.

This is the Ubuntu VM builder script which automates the process of
creating a ready to use VM based on Ubuntu. You can pass command
line options to add extra packages, remove packages, choose which
version of Ubuntu, which mirror etc. On recent hardware with plenty
of RAM, tmpdir in /dev/shm, and a local mirror, you can bootstrap a
vm in less than 50 seconds.
