Nigeria Favors Mandriva Over Microsoft Once More (PCWorld)

PCWorld reports that Nigeria now plans to keep Mandriva on its Classmate PCs. "Now, however, a government agency funding 11,000 of the PCs has overruled the supplier: Nigeria's Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) wants to keep Mandriva Linux on the Classmate PCs, said an official who identified himself as the program manager for USPF's Classmate PCs project. "We are sticking with that platform," said the official, who would not give his name."

" ... official, who would not give his name."

Somehow I cannot take this as the definitive answer as to Nigeria's ultimate actions, though
it stems from the supposed program manager. It just might be the price is still in question,
not what OS finally lands on the hardware. To MS, it's no more than change found on the floor
that's put to good use.

This statement sounds really odd to me. Microsoft might not care about the money, but they certainly do care about retaining their dominance in the market. Individual decisions like this add up over time in helping to introduce Linux to the desktop market, so they count as lost battles for Microsoft.

Simple. MS will find bit more change to get the result they are seeking. Note my saying the
price has not been set.

A little more written support for countries that make these decisions all be it a little
vague would be nice instead of the normal almost discounting comments we see , Whilst it may
be small change to that bunch of Redmond jerk offs it is still a small victory .

A little less support for the Redmond chimps and more support for Linux in general would be
nice do you not think .. #

It could be one or a billion it still is a win for GNU/Linux and to us, that should count!

For years we have been reading news like this. They lure us into the belief that ultimate
victory must be close. Actually any time now.

But the fact is, that Linux on the desktop still accounts to less machines then Macs and that
is not much.

So headlines like this are nice and I am happy for every Nigerian child exposed to a Mandrive
machine, BUT it just does not matter within the big picture. We use if for shoulder tapping
and Anti-M$ FUD, but this is ridiculous. It does not matter on the big scale.

A headline like "12 Million of Linux Desktops counted in schools in 26 countries around the
world counted by UNESO" would matter. All the rest is local news. We read it, because we lack
the important news in this category and we want to feel good. But under the line there is
little importance. To us. And I am not even sure it's much for my estimate of 20-50 Millions
of school children in Nigeria.

I don't think it amounts to less than Mac, actually, but it's impossible to say for sure.

Statistics

I think that statistics must be put into perspective. 1% of US web users can be more than 1 million people; and the same (or more) for the EU. Arguably most of us are technically savvy; and the percentage of users must be higher since many of us are forced to use Windows at work or in certain environments. (For example, half my visits to LWN are from Windows, even if by choice I'm a Linux user.) We might estimate as much as twice the percentage of visits.

4 million technically savvy users is a lot, and that is a victory in itself. The better mousetrap is out there and getting better all the time.

Let's all get counted!

You can register the fact that you are a linux user at The Linux Counter.

If everybody did this then all the lies and statistics about Linux would become facts, and lots of people would be in for a big surprise.
