There's an error in the article, it should read: 
"On Linux systems in the United States, and anywhere else that uses mainstream distros, MP3s
don't play out-of-the-box and it makes users very grumpy."

I *hate* that too. My girlfriend installed an Ubuntu today, and even with codec-buddy-like
solutions playing these formats is akward. She has to choose in a list of plugins, guessing
what she needs, and install non-free stuff just because of a stupid law in a remote country.
I'm grumpy.
