Turbolinux does the Microsoft deal

Microsoft has announced that Turbolinux is the latest to sign a "collaboration" deal which includes, of course, "intellectual property assurance." "Delivering value requires a vision for how to design mixed-source solutions that tackle clear customer priorities and a framework for sharing intellectual property. When strong Microsoft customers are evaluating Linux, we want them to see Turbolinux as the distribution that works best with their existing Microsoft investments."

Reverse patent trolling is a quick way to raise money for any company with a Linux product. Since MSFT's strategy here is based on not actually disclosing the mystery patents, you can hold the threat of a declaratory judgment suit over their head to get them to pay you off.

so, uh, wheres the beef?

Can anyone point to an open source project that has or will potentially soon benefit from
these wonderful 'collaborations'? I realize this is all PR BS, but was curious if the real
world will ever seen any benefits? Or do we only benefit from said collaborations if we
select a distribution that sold their soul?

No, no benefits. And no, it isn't just a PR BS, it is more about taking free software and
effectively turning it proprietary. That is why GPLv3 is so important and will be even more
important in the future.

Only those with no sense of history would sign up to be a "collaborator".
