13 reasons why Linux should be on your desktop (DesktopLinux)

DesktopLinux has a guest column with thirteen reasons Linux should be on your desktop. "Vista is a Wagner Opera that is usually late to start, takes too long to finish, and is spoilt by floorboards creaking under the weight of the cast. Mac OS X Leopard, meanwhile, is the late show in an exclusive nightclub where the drinks are always too expensive. In contrast, the Linux desktop is the free show in the park across the street -- it imposes some discomforts on the audience, but provides plenty of entertainment."

Rather than stating what is good about Linux they state things where Linux is not as bad as
Windows. It would be refreshing to see an article which considers the Linux desktops merits
in their own rights rather than Windows' failures.

On a lighter note I found the following particularly amusing:

> Windows on my Dell laptop is still intact after installing and uninstalling a dozen distros.

Ouch.

I agree with all your points.

Kind of lame that article, but thanks for spreading the word.

This guy sure has really no music taste.Maybe his preferred songs are something like the new
hit of britney spears.

14. Can be used to answers those "Is it a hardware or Windows driver/settings problem?!?!"
issues in minutes instead of hours.

I once had a neighbor who swore his son had toasted his soundcard while moving it between
computers. The original computer bluescreened every boot after the sound card was put back.
I booted Knoppix on his system, showed that all the devices were working correctly (even
sound). Then, using Firefox I found the exact cause of his blue screen in the MS Knowledge
base . It was actually a completely coincidental issue caused by a driver used by his backup
software! I then fixed the bluescreen-boot problem by mounting his windows drive as rw and
renaming the offending driver so it wouldn't load.

He would have spent days buying a new soundcard and trying to fix it himself, or payed through
the nose at one of the local shops, whereas having Linux handy made it a 15 minute thing to
diagnose and fix. He might not have been able to fix it himself, but he could have
immediately ruled out hardware as the problem. So, at the very least I think all people
should have a LiveCD handy.

Sidenote: Anytime I re-image a PC for friends and family, I put a Linux distro (usually
something easy to use like Mandriva or Ubuntu) on a dual-boot partition and use partimage to
backup the 'clean' Windows partition. Even if I can't convince them to use the Linux boot
option exclusively, it's dead-easy to walk them through restoring the Windows partition over
the phone, should it ever get screwed up by a trojan or virus or MS update.

I've done something similar, when my sister's PC broke. I went there, started the Knoppix disk, and everything was honkey dory. Conclusion: Windows driver messup. Since it was a bit tricky to reinstall Windows there (too difficult to create a the SATA driver floppy from the driver Cd when Knoppix is in the DVD drive ;-), I took it home, and as first try checked if her Windows booted on my computer, which happend to have almost identical hardware in it (except graphics card, which I swapped for this purpose). It did. So it wasn't Windows, it was the hardware. We got a new mainboard, and Windows worked again. Now I have a spare mainboard which is fine for Linux, but won't do Windows (shows that even mainboards have taste ;-).
