Mandrake Linux 9.0 for AMD 64-bit technology is available.

Altadena, CA and Paris, France; March 14th 2003 -- MandrakeSoft today
announced the release of Mandrake Linux 9.0 for Opteron® processors
based on AMD 64-bit technology.

This version of Mandrake Linux 9.0 for Opteron® processors has been
made available to MandrakeSoft's partners and is also available on
several public FTP mirrors. Hardware vendors and other potential
integrators are invited to contact MandrakeSoft at
<hardware@mandrakesoft.com> to test the product or to receive
certification.

Mandrake Linux 9.0 for Opteron® includes all the features currently
available in Mandrake Linux 9.0 for x86, including a high-performance
web server, ftp server, extended security services and databases. As
usual, this release also offers the famous "Mandrake touch" on the
desktop, which makes Mandrake Linux one of the most easy-to-use Linux
operating systems.

This development will lead to a planned release in April 2003 of the
'Mandrake Linux Corporate Server 2.1' for AMD Opteron®, a product
dedicated to server deployment in medium to large accounts. Later in
June 2003, MandrakeSoft will release 'MandrakeClustering' for
Opteron®, an easy-to-use clustering solution designed to answer needs
in the intensive calculation area that will greatly benefit from the
power of AMD 64-bit technology.

Mandrake 9.0 for Opteron® is one of the first operating systems
available for the new AMD 64-bit processors.

Mandrake is the best distro for 32 bit processing.
cant see any reason they wont be the best for 64.

I really wish people would look beyond the "best distro" idea. A one-size-fits-all approach is not the way to go. If you don't believe me, take a look at the behemoth Windows XP.

Many poeple have specific needs, and different distributions are available to fit those needs. It is folly to argue over who has the best method, because for every advantage, I promise you I can name at least one disadvantage.

Quite right - that's why Gentoo is really the best distro, because it isn't a distro at all ;-) It's a roll-your-own so you create exactly the distro you want, with nothing that you don't want, using beautifully engineered tools.

Anyway, to get back to the point, I can't wait for Hammer to really hit the market. AMD's future rides on this! They deserve to succeed, and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on an Athlon64 just as soon as I can afford to. With Mandrake and SuSE both ready with distros, hopefully the others will soon follow.

Yours is the third "gentoo is best" post I've had replied to me this week.

Gentoo has its fair share of problems, which gentoo users do not want to recognize.
