I wonder if the reality is just the simple cash equation. Women are still earning less than men generally so can less afford to share their free time.
Also it would be interesting to see if the time of women with it to spare is more often already committed to other ventures requiring generosity, for example charity shops seem to be operated by women.
Given just those examples, overall I don't find it surprising that female numbers in the free software world are so low.
