What's also worth mentioning: Most (all?) of IBM's kernel developers doing
Linux Scalability Work come from Sequent a company IBM bought a while ago.
Sequent sold the probably biggest x86 machines during the 90es (64 CPU), including a UNIX variant that actually scaled to that hardware (Dynix/ptx), unlike UnixWare which still struggled with 16 CPUs when I left Caldera last year. Engineers of that company also did much of the SMP work in SVR4.2 ES/MP on which UnixWare is based so the question really is who owns those "trade secrets" if they actually exist (I doubt it).
