The LWN Distributions List

The LWN Distribution List has now grown to over three hundred entries. That can only mean one thing, it's time to start cleaning out the dead and dying distributions. We started the process of link checking with our Historical section and have found some dead links and sites which no longer contain a distribution. Three hundred thirty distributions are still listed. The following distributions have been removed:
  • 3iLinux
  • Armed Linux
  • Compact Linux
  • Complete Linux
  • Elfstone Linux
  • nmrcOS
  • Progeny Debian
  • Prosa Debian
  • Serial Terminal Linux
  • Yggdrasil Plug and Play Linux
Both Progeny and Prosa are active Linux/free software companies, but they no longer provide a distribution.

Yggdrasil gone?

So they finally kicked the bucket?
It used to be one of the major early distributions, and one of the first distributions I used back in 1994 (the first one I believe was TransAm Linux, which was pre-installed for me). I liked its graphical package selection tool, which was ahead of its time and much better than RedHat had to offer.
They sold a dead-tree edition of LinuxDoc stuff for a while - or at least it was up on their website long after it had grown obsolete.
IIRC they adopted a browser project (Mosaic or some W3C tool) and hired someone to work on it in the late 1990's. I believe it never took off.

Yggdrasil browser projects

They adopted the W3C's Arena browser (the first X browser to support any sort of alpha transparency in PNGs, you betcha--and possibly the first browser to do so, period) after W3C decided Amaya was their new favorite. I believe the developer was Qing Long (or something like that), who renamed beta-3e to 0.3.5 and eventually worked up to 0.3.62, but by then I think Mozilla's source code had been released, so no one else paid much attention. A pity, but then again, there really are plenty of open-source browser projects out there...

I had a copy of Yggdrasil's "Linux Bible and GNU Testament". Eventually I gave it away to a new user, but I wish I still had it soley for the pun value.
