OLPC starts "Give 1 Get 1" program

The One Laptop Per Child project is starting a new program for people interested in getting the XO laptop for their children. The Give 1 Get 1 promotion, starting November 12, allows people to buy an XO for someone they know while sending one to a student in a developing country, all for $399. "While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have little resources to devote to education – sometimes less than $20 a year per child. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked by giving every child in the world the tools they need to learn, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter how little they may have. "

I find it hard to understand how Nicholas Negroponte, a self-identified dyslexic, decided that pale grey text against a white background was a good idea. I have better eyesight than most people I know (never needed corrective lenses in my life), but I find that page difficult to read.

If I understand correctly, part of the goal of the project is worldwide access to computing resources for everyone. Some Web designer seems to have forgotten the goal of accessibility.

The colours on this website make it hard to read the text. How about
black on white -- like books or this comment page? Now there's a new
concept. Patent pending... :-)

Too bad it is 'a promotion for a brief window of time'.

We don't know what demand will be; we have to ensure kids get machines until production is ramped up.

I'm considering doing this in order to simultaneously donate to OLPC and to get a robust laptop for one (or perhaps both) of my children.

I have only two reasons to hesitate. First, it doesn't have a touch screen. I might prefer to save my money in order to buy a touch screen device for my children. Second, I don't know much about administrating it. The weird stories about it phoning home and shutting itself off if it is reported to be stolen, for example -- is anything like that actually in there? I would obviously require full control over a device that I am going to entrust with my children's time and attention. Presumably, since it is Free Software and comes from a culture of freedom and openness, I'll be able to learn how to get that kind of control.

The way that mechanism was designed, if you buy it, it's your home it phones. The mechanism was designed so that the owners would be able to keep them in the right places when the right places are physically distant from the owners. I'm not sure if the ones they're selling in the US offer this feature, but if they do, it's up to the owner what key to give it.

We do not plan to provide the anti-theft service in the G1G1 program. The machines will be shipped unlocked.
