In laptop batteries, where ordinary people would come into contact with the units it's generally watt hours or (since the nominal voltage is fixed with a regulator) just amp hours for a specified voltage.

For a while the GNOME power stuff got this all upside down, showing remaining energy in watts, and current power use in watt hours, but this seems to have been fixed eventually.
