Quotes of the week

It took me over two solid days to get this lot compiling and booting on a few boxes. This required around ninety fixup patches and patch droppings. There are several bugs in here which I know of (details below) and presumably many more which I don't know of. I have to say that this just isn't working any more.

Linux developers firmly guard their independence and don't often follow our advice.
-- Richard Stallman

Yes, I realize that there's a lot of insane people out there. However, we generally don't do kernel design decisions based on them. But we can pat the insane users on the head and say "we won't guarantee it works, but if you eat your prozac, and don't bother us, go do your stupid things".

As far as I can tell RMS has never posted off the cuff: everything he posts/emails/says has thought behind it, so this is entirely in character. (Would that this was more common!)

Agreed, this was a very well-thought post by RMS. He basically says:

"My organization is not involved in this dispute, so please don't claim otherwise. I do have an opinion on this matter, but I don't think either side is likely to listen to it. So I'll let you continue to bicker amongst yourselves, and maybe I'll write a general guide to this issue at some future point when this particular flamewar is over."

It's sad that Stallman seems well past caring what the OpenBSD devs say or do, concluding that they are 'unreliable'.

I suspect the Linux devs are probably arriving at much the same conclusion, alas.

I find myself enjoy reading Stallman's comments more and more.

This man has true wisdom. I may not always agree with him, but you gotta admit he is consistent.
